History of Cocoa

The origin of the Cocoa name was an adaptation from the " cacahuatl" term; the Mayans renamed it in their totonac language to designate the cocoa tree, the Maya god's tree. As for theobroma, it dates back to Ancient Greece and means "food of the gods" it was also used to identify the cocoa producing tree as well as the word chocolate.

The Mayans and Aztecs of Mexico have been cultivating the cocoa tree for over 3000 years. The pod (cabosse in French) is the cocoa tree flower, and it played a decisive role in their culture. Historically, they used the cocoa pod as divine nourishment but also as tribute (taxation form paid to Aztecs) or trade. In these so-called primitive cultures, cocoa was central in many mystical rituals, glazing their bodies with the cocoa-based paste in order to gain closer contact to the divine.

Moreover, with the knowledge that cocoa possessed curative powers, they created butter and oil to soothe sunburns or frostbite and also used it as a sunscreen.

In 1519, Spanish conquistador Don Hernan Cortes set foot in Mexico hoping to discover precious gold. Instead, the inhabitants offered him mountains of cocoa. The explorer returned to Spain in 1540 loading his galleons with cocoa. They experimented by mixing it with sugar, cream and vanilla, inventing what we currently know as chocolate!
